HK Pickleball Guide

How to Choose Your First Pickleball Paddle

For your first paddle, aim for a mid-weight paddle of about 7.6–8.4 ounces with a 16 mm polymer core, and don’t overspend. A buying guide from Racquetsocial calls that weight range a safe bet for most players, and a thicker core gives the control beginners need more than power. Only worry about “approved” paddles if you plan to enter tournaments.

What are the rules on paddle size and weight?

The official limits are generous. Under the USA Pickleball rules:

  • Size: length plus width, including the edge guard and butt cap, can’t exceed 24 inches, and length alone can’t exceed 17 inches.
  • Weight and thickness: there’s no restriction on either.
  • Surface: the hitting face can’t have rough textures, holes, cracks or delamination.

For sanctioned tournaments your paddle must also be listed as “Pass” on the USA Pickleball-Approved Paddle List. Approved paddles are usually stamped “USA Pickleball Approved”. For social games in Hong Kong, any paddle will do.

How heavy should my paddle be?

Most paddles weigh 7 to 9 ounces. The trade-off:

Lighter paddle Heavier paddle
Swing Quicker and easier to manoeuvre Slower
Power Less; you may over-swing to compensate More
Comfort Easier on the arm Can strain the arm and shoulder over long sessions

That’s why the middle of the range, around 7.6–8.4 ounces, suits most new players. If you have any elbow or shoulder trouble, err towards the lighter end.

Does paddle thickness matter?

Yes, more than most beginners expect. Paddle cores usually range from 11 to 18 mm:

  • Thicker (around 16 mm): more feel and control. Many professional players use 16 mm paddles.
  • Thinner: more power and “pop” off the face.

Soft shots like the third-shot drop depend on touch and control, so a 16 mm paddle is a sensible first choice.

What are paddles made of?

Two parts matter, the core and the face:

  • Core: most paddles use a polymer (polypropylene) or Nomex honeycomb, which keeps weight down. Wood and aluminium cores are cheaper and fine for a first paddle on a budget.
  • Face: carbon fibre, graphite or fibreglass. As a rule of thumb, a thinner core with fibreglass leans towards power; a thicker core with carbon or graphite leans towards control.

Which shape and grip size should I get?

  • Standard (about 16 × 8 in): balanced, a good default.
  • Elongated (about 16.5 × 7.5 in): more reach, narrower face.
  • Widebody (about 15.5 × 8.5 in): a wider face.

For grip size, 4¼ inches is the most common. Players with larger hands may prefer 4⅜ or 4½ inches, and you can always build a grip up with an overgrip, but you can’t make it smaller.

How much should I spend?

Racquetsocial’s price tiers (in US dollars):

  • Under US$50: wood or composite paddles, fine for beginners.
  • US$50–100: composite or graphite, better performance and durability.
  • Over US$200: graphite or carbon fibre at the top end.

A budget or mid-range paddle is enough to start. Prices in Hong Kong vary by shop and import costs, so compare a few before buying, and try friends’ paddles at social sessions to find a weight you like.

Which balls should I buy?

Buy outdoor balls for Hong Kong’s open-air courts. Outdoor balls have more, smaller holes and harder, heavier plastic, so they cope better with wind. Indoor balls are lighter and softer, with fewer, larger holes. Under the rules, any regulation ball has between 26 and 40 circular holes.

Frequently asked questions

What weight pickleball paddle should a beginner buy?

Most paddles weigh 7 to 9 ounces, and one buying guide calls 7.6 to 8.4 ounces a safe bet for most players. Lighter paddles are quicker to move; heavier ones add power but can tire your arm and shoulder over a long session.

Does my pickleball paddle need to be USA Pickleball approved?

Only for sanctioned tournaments, which require a paddle on the USA Pickleball-Approved Paddle List. For social games and practice any paddle is fine. Approved paddles are usually stamped "USA Pickleball Approved".

Is a thicker pickleball paddle better?

Thicker isn't better, just different. Paddle cores usually range from 11 to 18 mm. A 16 mm core gives more feel and control; thinner paddles give more power and pop.

What's the difference between indoor and outdoor pickleballs?

Outdoor balls have more, smaller holes and are heavier with harder plastic, so they cope better with wind. Indoor balls have fewer, larger holes and softer, lighter plastic. Use outdoor balls on Hong Kong's open-air courts.
